A PLACE OF WONDER…
Sanderson Antiques and Design originated 18 years ago as “a little Room” in San Antonio.
The casual relaxed small shop is filled with treasures and relics of things that I have found irresistible. The shop specializes in 17th thru 18th century European antiques. Chandeliers, fortuny, painted commodes, and whimsical objects are a few of the choices one might find. Headboards, tabletops, lamps, pillows and chairs become enchanted with tapestries and textiles. Contemporary art from local artisans hang from the walls along side soft rubbed gilt mirrors. Stacks of beautiful oushak rugs are folded in corners of each room. The store is a culmination of refined subtle elegance that hopefully gives each individual an inspiration.
MEET THE OWNER
“How does one describe themselves? Gosh! I guess you start with what you love. I live in the Texas hill county for the most part. On my way home I’m usually greeted by a large herd of axis deer or black buck. I have to say that it always put a smile on my face. My favorite past time is riding my horses and I love great food with family and friends. I also have a small place in San Antonio in a fabulous old building with plaster walls and great soaring ceilings. I feel extremely blessed and grateful.
You will always find a large bunch of roses or peonies in my kitchen. Usually they are sitting in a old piece of colorful pottery. Actually, all types of beautiful pottery intrigues me. It can be Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, or French. Stacks of dishes in painted finishes sit beside collections from travels. I use everything. The tables I eat from have rich warm patina’s from years of use. Nothing is perfect. 17th and 18th c. tapestries hang on walls and soft rubbed gilt mirrors float above painted commodes. I could have lived in another time, however I like modern convenience too much.I love to create one of a kind lamps from candlesticks or old architectural pieces. Usually the shield or shades are embellished with fortuny or vintage linen with tapestry. When creating a room a bit of whimsy is usually involved. Colorful contemporary art adds a layer of interest. I love both clean lined sofas and plump down filled ones. Interesting pillows from fragments of tapestry or ecclesiastical elements adorn these.
My store is a combination of all of these things. A collection of things that I love. The chandeliers can be hand forged iron, soft rubbed gilt with antique crystals, or painted carved wood. The candlesticks are interesting in shape and size and have years of use. The tapestries are finely woven threads of of magical, mystical creatures, or historical scenes telling us a story. A combination of all of this I surround myself with. Beautiful objects, laughter, and wildlife. That would be just a few of my favorites.”
